Over 100 Years of Flooring Excellence

About Haywood-Berk Flooring

Haywood-Berk Flooring, with a rich history spanning over a century, is a renowned name in the flooring industry. Since its inception, the company has left an indelible mark of excellence through its impeccable craftsmanship and commitment to delivering exceptional flooring solutions. With a portfolio that includes iconic commercial landmarks and esteemed institutions, Haywood-Berk Flooring has established itself as a trusted partner for luxury residences, cultural centers, and notable addresses throughout New York City.

Haywood-Berk Flooring owes much of its success and reputation to Otto Berk, a significant figure in the flooring industry. Otto Berk’s legacy dates back to 1921 when his father, Otto Berk Sr., founded the Otto Berk Flooring Company in New York City. From 1921 to 1953, the company was involved in notable installations such as Yale University, Princeton University, and the residences of prominent families like the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers.

Otto Berk’s contributions to the flooring industry were recognized by Connor Sports Flooring Corporation, which nominated him as a charter member of the MFMA (Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association) Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, Otto tirelessly promoted MFMA maple installations, both as a contractor and as a sales manager for Connor.

He played a crucial role in the sale and installation of numerous prestigious projects in New York and along the East Coast through his contracting companies and as Connor’s Northeast sales manager.

In 1953, Otto Berk Jr. assumed leadership of the family business and renamed it Otto Berk and Sons. In 1960, he further expanded the company by merging with the Haywood Company, forming the Haywood-Berk Flooring Company.

Under the banner of Haywood Berk, Otto continued to promote MFMA maple and spearheaded remarkable installations that have become part of the company’s distinguished legacy.

Some of the notable projects credited to Otto Berk and Haywood Berk include the New York Knicks, Adelphi College, the NBA National Headquarters, the Getty Museum, Lincoln Center, JFK Center in Washington, D.C., Chase Manhattan Bank, and the New York City Board of Education.

As Connor’s Northeast sales manager, Otto mentored many flooring contractors, contributing to their growth and the overall development of the industry. His lasting relationships with architects, contractors, and end-users exemplify his dedication and influence.

In recognition of Otto’s significant contributions and unwavering commitment, Connor honored him by naming its Atlanta Design and Performance Center “The Otto Berk Center” in 1993.

With a reputation for delivering exceptional results and an extensive list of prestigious installations, Haywood-Berk Flooring remains a trusted partner for those seeking the finest flooring solutions in New York City and beyond.
